Over the past two decades, I’ve been privileged to work in diverse educational settings that have shaped my journey. My career began in 2000 as a tutor and Site Supervisor for the Waco Reads / Communities in Schools program. In my final year of college, I was also a General Education and SAT/ACT instructor with Sylvan Learning Center. These early experiences laid the groundwork for my commitment to high-quality, differentiated education.
As I continued to grow professionally, I transitioned into leadership roles that allowed me to impact mathematics education on a broader scale. I served as the K-12 Mathematics Supervisor for a school district, overseeing curriculum and instruction across all grade levels. Additionally, I worked as the Secondary Mathematics Research Coordinator for the Southern Methodist University (SMU) Research in Mathematics Education (RME) Unit, where I engaged in research-driven practices to improve math learning experiences.
My passion for curriculum development burgeoned as an AmeriCorps member working for the Metro Dallas Homeless Alliance. During this year of service, I created Tech Connect, a technology education and job skills development program for homeless adults in Dallas, TX. Since then, I’ve developed many curricula, including the Algebra 1 for Multilingual Learners curriculum for the Dallas Independent School District and curriculum guides for the State Fair of Texas and the Dallas Cowboys.
Throughout my career, I have taught at the elementary, middle, high school, and post-secondary levels, bringing instructional expertise and a deep understanding of student learning to every classroom. As a high school mathematics and science academic coach, I provided targeted support to teachers, helping them refine their instructional practices. My training as a Master Mathematics Teacher through The System for Teacher and Student Advancement (TAP) further enhanced my teaching and coaching capabilities, allowing me to support meaningful, effective teaching practices in mathematics.
As past president of the Benjamin Banneker Association, Inc. (BBA), I champion high-quality mathematics instruction, particularly for students of African ancestry. During my tenure, I founded the organization’s first peer-reviewed journal, The Lighthouse Almanac, to provide a platform for celebrating the brilliance of Black children who succeed in mathematics through asset-based practices. I also represented BBA in national educational policy efforts through initiatives such as the Conference Board of Mathematical Sciences (CBMS) High School to College Mathematics Pathways, TPSE Math, and the Launch Years Initiative with the Dana Center, all dedicated to advancing equitable mathematics pathways.
In 2008, I founded Me to the Power of Three, LLC, as a tutoring company for high school and post-secondary students. Since 2016, the company has evolved into a consulting firm specializing in curriculum development, educational program design, and strategic professional growth initiatives for individuals, schools, and organizations. As an educational strategist, I have collaborated with esteemed organizations such as the George Lucas Education Research Foundation, talkSTEM, Student Achievement Partners, and the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), where I was a co-creator of the Big Career Interview Card Game, participated in the Get the Facts Out initiative, and was a co-editor of the MAA Notes Volume Justice Through the Lens of Calculus: Framing New Possibilities for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
I am an active member of several professional organizations. I am a board member of talkSTEM and the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics (NCSM). I recently earned my Ph.D. in Secondary Mathematics Education from Auburn University. My research focuses on professional learning to promote mathematics co-teaching practices, enhancing mathematics learning experiences for culturally and linguistically diverse students, and advancing culturally sustaining pedagogy. These roles underscore my commitment to influencing mathematics education research, policy, and practice to serve all students better.
